Why is Tony Alva featured in our first teaser/trailer? It’s personal.
.
We’re damn proud to release this first teaser footage of the Humanity Stoked Documentary, featuring Tony Alva, and here’s why. I was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1966, and ten years later, my family relocated to Southern California. That move changed what skateboarding meant to me forever, and seeing Tony Alva in skateboarding magazines was part of the reason why. Just a few years earlier, Tony and his fellow Zepher surfing team members asked Zepher shop owners Jeff Ho and Skip Engblom to start a skateboard team, and an epic 40 year skateboard journey began for Tony.
.
For the last decade, Tony’s been on a personal and spiritual journey as well. It’s been a profound period of growth for him, turning away from the shallow trappings of ego and self-destructive behavior, and adjusting his value system to prioritize love, acceptance and being of service to others. As for me, back in 1979, at 12 years old, when my family returned to New York without having ever met Tony, I had no idea that 40 years later, I’d be sitting in recording studio with him, deep in a spiritual conversation for this documentary, and finding myself admiring him once again, yet for entirely new reasons. I could not have imagined that he and I would join together, along with so many other amazing people in the film, to help inspire others. I too have been on an journey of awakening, and along the way, I’ve learned that beautiful and amazing things await each of us, if we open up our hearts, accept ourselves, let go of fear, embrace uncertainty, and embrace one another in the process. Thank you Tony, and much love to you, Brother! …..@michael Michael Ien Cohen, Producer/Director
